Two years ago we were introduced to the world of Carbon Literacy and it started us on a new and exciting journey.
What is Carbon Literacy we hear you ask?
An awareness of the carbon dioxide costs and impacts of everyday activities, and the ability and motivation to reduce emissions, on an individual, community and organisational basis.
Specifically for us, this highlighted the invisible world of digital dirt and the damage it is causing our planet as far as CO2 emissions are concerned.
We were disturbed by the implications and decided to begin some changes for ourselves.
Then we read
World Wide Waste by Gerry McGovern and thought we’ve got to do something about this no matter how small our contribution is.
We started developing a climate-first approach to our work.
We pledge to be more sustainable ourselves and to offer sustainable solutions to our clients.
These are our own ten key sustainability motivators:
- Committed to becoming a zero carbon business.
- The first step was understanding our own carbon footprint online. We’ve worked really hard to make sure that every single web page on our website stays under the 1.0g CO2 emissions target. We audit regularly as well to include any new pages that we create. We'll be offering low-carbon services to our clients so that they can offset their carbon emissions, too. Helping to do our bit to de-carbonise the web has become our mission and passion.
- Practise ethical and inclusive sustainable web design, development and marketing services. Continue to make our websites as clean-coded and lightweight as possible to use less energy in their page loading process.
- Ditch the office. We tried it and we don’t need it to do good work.
- Meet clients remotely wherever possible.
- Use less paper. It’s a balancing act between paper and tech but we are more mindful than ever.
- Try to send no more than 10 emails a day.
- Choose our suppliers wisely so that they align with our own sustainability goals.
- Adopt a repair-first model to prolong the lifespan of our hardware. Purchase reconditioned tech if this is not possible.
- Plant trees to celebrate website launches instead of giving gifts.
- Review regularly and look for further de-carbonising opportunities.
