Introducing The ´Decarbonising Digital´ Carbon Literacy Course For The Digital & Tech Sector

 
"An awareness of the carbon dioxide costs and impacts of everyday activities, and the ability and motivation to reduce emissions, on an individual, community and organisational basis."


Then I read World Wide Waste by Gerry McGovern and I  thought we’ve got to do something about this no matter how small our contribution is.

Specifically for us, this highlighted the invisible world of digital dirt and the damage it is causing our planet as far as CO2 emissions are concerned.

We were disturbed by the implications and decided to begin some changes for ourselves.

We started developing a climate-first approach to our work.

The next thing I did personally was to take a Carbon Literacy course myself to get my own certification.

I achieved this late Summer 2023 but I realised something was missing from the course I took designed for SMEs.

There was no mention of digital emissions. 

I carried out some further research and discovered that there didn't seem to be a public facing course available anywhere that taught learners about digital decarbonisation.

It wasn't really a surprise though as this topic hasn't been one that's been widely discussed .. yet.

After speaking to the people at The Carbon Literacy Project to find out more I decided there was a gap to be filled and so embarked upon my journey to become a course creator.

At that point they were only in the very first early stages of creating a Digital & Tech Toolkit.

Many, many hours of research ensued including pulling out  and dissecting all the information I had stored in my own hardrive {aka my brain} after 17 years of working in the industry.

The 'Decarbonising Digital' course  was officially accredited in November 2023.

It was the first public Carbon Literacy course for the digital and tech industry.

I should pat myself more on the back for this! 

Fast forward to January 2023 and after its first successful delivery we are now waiting to receive a bunch of certificates from CLP for our learners.

Unleashing it into the world was a tiny bit daunting for something I've never done before but the feedback has been amazing so far. I feel as if teaching is something I'm going to love.

I wrote the course with agencies in mind but having delivered it I now know that it can be tweaked for any kind of business or organisation.

After all, it's 2023 and every business uses multiple devices, buys software, sends emails, stores data, surfs the web and many more digitally driven activities. 

The course really works well when its delivered to a group of people from the same business. I think that's where the most powerful actions can come from but I'm also going to release from time to time some dates for individuals.
